Overview

Under the leadership of Christian Cardinal Tumi, the Archdiocese of Douala has been one of the most dedicated and effective organizations in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Cameroon. Douala, Cameroon's largest city, is the epicenter of a crisis that has touched the entire country. The rising prevalence of HIV infections in urban areas is creating an unprecedented strain on the city's health infrastructure. The Archdiocese has been on the front lines of this battle, enacting a multisectorial plan of action which includes: HIV/AIDS prevention education in primary and secondary schools; peer education for non-schooled youths; and the operation of 12 health centers and maternity clinics throughout the city.

Among the services provided in each of its 12 health centers (i.e. primary health care, prenatal consultations, tuberculosis testing and treatment), the Archdiocese provides voluntary HIV/AIDS testing and counseling and treats AIDS-related opportunistic infections. FECH has partnered with the Archdiocese of Douala to provide finances for three of its current projects that will expand the breadth of its services and the number of patients who will receive care.
