Overview
The Youth Development Foundation was founded in 1994 in Yaoundé,
Cameroon in order to address a growing need for information about
reproductive health issues amongst youth in Cameroon. As one of
the premier organizations in youth development, YDF has become
a leader in its field, participating in coalitions with similar
organizations as well as providing training for these groups. One
of the unique aspects of YDF is its commitment to being an organization
run by youths for youths. In addition to a paid staff and 60 adult
volunteers, YDF has trained more than 250 Peer Educators to serve
as principal agents for disseminating information and services
to other adolescents. YDF is currently in the process of constructing
a clinic in Yaoundé for the sole purpose of serving youths
and their reproductive health needs. YDF has operations in three
cities throughout Cameroon: Yaoundé, Makak, and Bafoussam.
Each one of these locations presents specific needs and problems
facing the adolescent community in terms of sexuality and views
towards reproductive health.
Focusing on young people between the ages of 10 and 24—especially vulnerable street children—YDF aims to: promote the healthy growth and social welfare of children and youth; assist disadvantaged children and youth in overcoming their psychosocial problems; inform youths in the areas of family life and reproductive health; provide skills training and job creation activities; and foster interest in community and environmental issues.
YDF believes that every child and adolescent should have a supportive environment to develop into useful citizens who can harness their potential and use their energy to benefit themselves, their peers, their families, their communities, and their nation.
